How Has COVID-19 Affected the Mental Health of Expats?

For mental health awareness week 2021, William Russell surveyed over 1,100 expatriates in five countries to reveal some worrying stats about expat mental health.

The results highlight the unique challenges faced by over 66 million people worldwide living as expatriates. Not only have they had to navigate the global pandemic like the rest of the world, they’ve done so while living, working or studying in a foreign country. That means they’ve been more isolated from traditional support networks such as friends and families.

If Not London… Where?

It took a global pandemic to finish what Brexit started, with ‘the great reshuffle’ well underway. While it is well documented that homeowners and tenants have re-evaluated their lifestyles, swapping city bolt holes for countryside cottages, there is an equally important shift in the business sector.

The Big Office Return

As we mark the first anniversary of the UK’s lockdowns, thoughts turn to us regaining a sense of normality. The Government’s roadmap will shape the speed at which professionals return to their offices, with the ‘work from home where you can’ ruling staying in place until the 17th May 2021.
From this date, official guidelines state ‘most businesses in all but the highest risk sectors will be able to reopen’ and indoor hospitality will return in an outdoor capacity, giving workers a familiar rhythm again in the shape of business lunches and after-work drinks.

Relocating to Amsterdam

As the capital of the Netherlands and the leader of a more liberal lifestyle, Amsterdam needs little introduction. The city is divided into seven districts: Centrum, Oost, West, Nieu-West, Nord, Zuid and Zuid-Oost – all well connected by cycle paths, public transport and even water taxi.

Although not classed as a coastal city, Amsterdam is linked to open water by the long North Sea Canal and the centre itself is reported to have more than 165 ‘grachten’ (canals) that total in excess of 100 kilometres, with around 90 islands and 1,500 bridges.

Relocating to Paris

Endless romance, haute couture, café culture and exquisite patisseries are all synonymous with Paris but clichés aside, the capital of France remains a prestigious location in which to work and live.

Paris is a northern central city on the banks of the River Seine, with fantastic connections to the rest of Europe – and the world – by air, rail, road and sea. It is the most populated city in France, with over 2 million inhabitants in the centre alone and almost 11 million in the wider Région Parisienne. The city is divided into 20 districts, known as arrondissements, with the underground ‘Metro’ and RER express commuter trains serving the inner-city neighbourhoods and banlieus – the Parisian suburbs.

This is part of a wider programme of change to transform the operation of the UK’s border and immigration system. The UK Government has advised that EU and non-EU citizens will be treated equally and will give top priority to those with the highest skills and the greatest talents: scientists, engineers, academics and other highly-skilled workers.
